When old is the new new

I guess you have heard it already. The Swiss watch exports are suffering. Hong Kong and Macau are paralyzed and the Swiss manufacturers are stunned by export numbers that are as low as they were in midst of the financial crisis in 2009. The novelties on offer at Basel World 2016 did reflect on the slump and several of the luxury watch brands offered more steel watches that before.

Time to change and rock at Tidemann

Brothers Tom Andre and Lars Christian Tidemann are the men behind the watch store Tidemann Urmakermester in the heart of Oslo. ‘0024 WatchWorld’ caught up with them and their ambassador Hank von Hell. Right in time to find out that Stockholm based Nymans Ur 1851 acquired 51% of the ownership of Tidemann. As of Thursday June 16th of this year, Swedish Nymans Ur 1851 is the majority shareholder in Oslo based Tidemann. As both parties have a solid experience in the business the partnership between Nymans Ur 1851 and Tidemann is one that starts with great confidence.

Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Master Chronometer

On the eve of BaselWorld 2015 Omega, in a separate location, introduced the Globemaster. The watch raised some eyebrows with respect to its appearance - particularly the ‘fluted bezel’ that was very reminiscent of a model used by its major competitor - but also generated whistles of admiration when it came to its movement technology, as the Globemaster is a kind of super-chronometer. The watch is the very first to be fitted with the tested and approved METAS-certified movement. BaselWorld 2016 is the stage for a new super-chronometer that is a chronograph as well - a super-chronochronometer maybe?

Bronze tribute: Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition

During BaselWorld Oris presented the maison’s first bronze diver’s watch: the Carl Brashear Limited Edition. The watch, based on the Oris Divers Sixty-Five, commemorates a man who overcame racial discrimination and, later in his career, a physical handicap as well. We are talking about Carl Brashear (1931 – 2006), the first African-American Master Diver of the American Navy. We talked to his son Phillip about the legacy of his father.

Jaquet Droz The Charming Bird

The fact that watchmakers revel in ‘the more complications per square centimeter the better’ isn't news to anyone. But the 2016 edition of Jaquet Droz’ The Charming Bird is a masterful performance at micro level. The brand debuted an initial version with the complication in 2013 and made the official introduction in 2015. The 2016 variant is limited to 16 pieces, eight in white gold and eight in red gold.
