Yesterday Part 1 of our insight report, today part II. People who like cars generally like watches and vice versa. The flowing simple design of a Ferrari 250 GTO can bring a car aficionado to tears. Same goes for a simple Patek Philippe Calatrava and a watch collector. But what happens when watch and car designs merge? Have you ever seen a car with the design of a watch?
Motorsport and time recording cannot always be viewed entirely separately. Stopwatches and chronographs have enabled motorsport since the very first races; consequently, they are a functional necessity. Designing watches that resemble cars is a modern trend that is anything but functional. Is this new design direction an enrichment or an expression of creative poverty?
Those with a penchant for the finer things in life know about the L.U.C collection by Chopard. The manufacture in the Swiss town of Fleurier builds unique movements that have no trouble at all competing with the established names in haute horlogerie, and has been doing so for 20 years.
In 1993 Caroline Scheufele devised the Happy Sport watch, which has since become one of the cornerstones of the house of Chopard and achieved its fame and reputation because of the diamonds dancing across the dial. Many variations later the Happy Sport was given a self-winding mechanism on the occasion of its 20th birthday in 2013.
Ulysse Nardin honors the monkey with the Cheerful Year of the Monkey timepiece, the latest addition to its Classico Collection. The dial is designed in a comic book-like style to best capture the lively character of the monkey who appears to leap through a brush of palm fronds. His expression is alert, his body lithe and the early workings of an impish grin begin to emerge.
